Trip Overview
The Western Xia tombs (Xixia Mausoleum), occupying an area of some 50 sq kms (19 sq mi), are the Imperial Cemetery of the Western Xia Kingdom (AD 1038 - 1227). It is located at the foot of the Helan Mountains in the Ningxia Hui Autonomous Region of north-western China, about 40 kilometres (25 mi) westward from capital city of the Western Xia and now capital of Ningxia Hui Autonomous Region �C Yinchuan. It includes nine imperial mausoleums and 250 tombs of imperial relatives and officials, and is also called "Chinese pyramid."The Western Xia Kingdom (also known as Tangut Empire), existed between AD 1038 and 1227. The empire was founded by the Tangut ethnic group and was finally conquered by the Mongols under Genghis Khan.
