West End Tavern, the place to be for cod in little Millstadt, Illinois
West End Tavern is better on the inside than to see on the outside. From the Gateway Arch downtown St. Louis, take I-55 south to I-255, go west over the Jefferson Barracks bridge to Illinois highway 3 and go south on it to Illinois highway 158. Take 158 to Millstadt. Restaurant serves carry out or dine-in Friday, Saturday and Sunday from 4 pm till 8pm or before if customers don't show up.
This area of Illinois has its share of fish taverns, meaning they sell cod mainly but other fish as well. West End Tavern has been remodeled in the bar complete with flatscreen televisions. The rest of the place is, aside from pictures and window treatment, the same as its always been. A new floor was put in the main dining room. Outside dining is with picnic tables and small pea sized gravel that makes walking a little bit of a challenge.
Sunday is the calmest day to visit, Saturday is busier and Friday busiest., especially in the bar. A local couple and their son own and manage the place. The bar closes midnight most nights.
