Why Supporting Community Theater is So Important

Viewed: 804

Community theater now is just as important as it has ever been. Whether it’s amateur or professional, local theater contributes to the arts and the community as a whole. It provides the community with an opportunity to come together to celebrate through creativity and art.

Even those who are not involved in the production should still support the art itself. The role of the audience is extremely important as well.

Here is a list of reasons why you should support the performing arts in your community:

 -  Society itself is reflected in the performing arts. Watching a play live gives you the opportunity to see yourself. Appreciating theater helps you to understand what it means to be a human being. It’s a universal cultural phenomenon that exists – and has always existed in some form or another – in every society across the globe.

Local theater represents a unique collaboration of various forms of art: acting, costuming, dancing, singing, directing, set design, lighting, visual effects, and so forth. So much goes into a single performance, that it would be a shame not to watch it.

-  It’s a great way to spend time with your family. Staying at home watching Netflix with the family or going to the local cinema isn’t the same as a live, theatrical production. Even if you go by yourself, you’ll still feel a connection with the other audience members and the people on the stage. Each performance and audience is a unique experience that can only be captured in the moment. It can be a very educational experience for children – especially if it’s a Shakespeare play.

-  It can be a very therapeutic experience for everyone involved. The actors can express their emotions in a positive manner and the audience gets to experience a wide range of emotions while watching it unfold. The stage is transformed into an entire “world” to be observed by the community.

-  You are supporting and helping to nurture artists in your area. By showing up, you are giving them the encouragement they need to continue performing. Many successful writers, choreographers, actors, and dancers started out in humble, small-town theater.

-  Community theater offers a great opportunity to be social and to make new friends. It’s a safe, positive environment for everyone involved. You never know who you might end up chatting with while watching the play.

Why stop at just being an audience member? Why not join a school like Cavod Academy and become involved in the local theater production yourself? You’re never too old to get involved in theater!
