10 Widely Enjoyed Mexican Foods

Mexican salsa is another word for spicy sauce and is prepared in the molcajete (mortar and pestle). Used as a condiment in Mexican cuisine, salsa requires ingredients such as cooked tomatoes, onion, garlic, fresh cilantro, chili peppers, lime juice, tomatillos, herbs, etc. Mexican salsa is prepared in various forms and some examples include: salsa roja (red sauce), salsa cruda (raw/chopped/Mexican/fresh sauce), salsa verde (green sauce), salsa negra (black sauce), salsa taquera (taco sauce), salsa ranchera (ranch-style sauce), salsa cube (raw sauce), salsa brava (wild sauce), guacamole, mole, mango salsa, chipotle salsa, etc.




The tortilla is a flatbread made of corn or wheat which is widely consumed in Mexico. Commonly prepared with meat, Mexican tortillas are also used to make dishes such as tacos, enchiladas, and burritos.



Also known as taco de harina, this Mexican delicacy is a tortilla wrap made of flour which is wrapped or folded around a filling. The tortilla is lightly steamed or grilled to become soft. Filled with beans, Mexican rice, steak, salsa, avocado, cheese, lettuce and sour cream, burritos make for a great meal for lunch, dinner or even breakfast!


Mexican Picadillo

In this recipe, finely chopped or ground beef is cooked with vegetables or fruits. Widely appreciated throughout Latin America, it is served as a main dish or used as a filling for empanadas, tacos, tamales, burritos, etc.


Caramel Flan


Served for dessert in Spain and across Latin America, this creamy custard is cherished for its simplicity and warm flavors of caramel and vanilla. Cooked in bain-marie to develop a gelatinous consistency, this typical Mexican dessert complements every type of Mexican fare.




This avocado-based dip first originated in Mexico. Ripe avocados are mashed in a traditional pestle and mortar called molcajete and then seasoned with tomatoes, lime juice, garlic, coriander and other flavorful ingredients.


Pico de Gallo


Also called salsa fresca, pico de gallo is prepared using chopped tomatoes, onions, chilis (serranos or jalapeños), lime juice or lemon, fresh cilantro, radish, cucumber or any other pulpy fruit like mango. It can be used as a Mexican salsa or as a main filling in fajitas and tacos.



Empanadas are stuffed breads or pastries made of a dough or bread patty which is wrapped around the stuffing. Large/Small and circular in shape, empanadas are stuffed with savory fillings of meat, beans, cheese or chicken and crisp pie crust.




Covered with a chili pepper sauce, enchiladas are made of corn or flour tortillas and rolled around fillings that include beans, cheese, meat, seafood, potatoes and other veggies. These soft tortillas are oven-baked in a tangy and rich sauce and is a firm favorite of children and adults alike.
