Viewed: 271

Traveling to Paris is definitely a great experience. You can never be bored in the “city of love”. Even the simpler things like wondering through the Paris’s streets, drinking coffee or going to a picnic seem more amazing here. Needless to say that there are so many attractions that you don’t know which you should visit first. We’ve made a top with the most important 3 historical landmarks in Paris. If you have time while you’re in Paris, you can spend the day visiting them.

1.      La Conciergerie

La Conciergerie was built on the sites of a Roman fortification and it was used for many purposes over the years.  At the beginning, the building used to be The Palace of Justice in the 13th century. Later on, La Conciergerie served as a prison for many centuries. The place became the Revolutionary Tribunal during the French Revolution and here people were trialed and sentenced to death by guillotine.  After the French Revolution, the building was used again as a prison until 1914 when it was declared a national historical monument and the public was allowed to visit it. Nowadays, a small part of La Conciergerie is open for public visitations; the rest of it serves as courts. The admission fee is 7 euros for adults.

2.     Arc de Triomphe

This impressive, neoclassical arch is situated in the center of Place Charles de Gaulle. Arc de Triomphe is a tribute to the French solders that lost their lives in Austerlitz battle.  Napoleon the first ordered the construction of this arch in order to celebrate his victory and to honor the soldiers. The most known feature of the Arc de Triomphe is the “Tomb of the Unknown Soldiers”. Moreover, you can go to the terrace of the arch and regard Paris from a higher height or you can visit the small museums that are inside the construction.

3.     Sainte-Chapelle

This French gothic chapel is found inside Palais de la Cité. King Louis IX commissioned the construction of this chapel in order to expose the relics of the Passion of Christ which included a part of the original cross and the Crown of Thorns. Nowadays, you can find the relics at Notre Dame Cathedral.

The most beautiful parts of this chapel are the stained glass windows and it’s a good example of the architectural design “Rayonnant”.

The admission fee for adults is 8 euros.
