Berlin may be miles away from the nearest body of salty water, but that doesn't mean you can't slip pina colada on a sandy beach in Germany's capital. For some reason, beach bars abound in this landlocked metropolis, especially in summer. But many of these also operate year-round.

The urban beach along the bank of the Spree River is billed as Berlin’s "open air meeting point." The 80 tons of sand  needed to create this trendy concept have been welcomed as a user-friendly element to shake off that big-city feeling-it’s hard to imagine that the urban beach occupies the site of former industrial ruin.

On hot summer days, swimmers and sun-lovers come together at Flughafensee, a charming lake situated close (but not too close) to Tegel Airport in the north of the city.

Großer Wannsee
Not many people connect Berlin with closely foliaged forests and crystal clear lakes. Yet the city is richly gifted with both, particularly in the south-west, where several relaxing lakes - of which Wannsee is the largest - stud Grunewald Forest like shiny emeralds. Several boats offer cruises on the lake and surrounding waters and there are also ferries to Peacock Island , potsdam and Spandau .

A rolling hill leads to this modest lake with a green field dotted with oak trees and lots of bathers. Keep in mind: there will be some nudists. Located in the south west of Berlin.

One of the largest lakes in the city is also one of the most popular, complete with wicker beach chairs for rent. Located in the southwestern Berlin borough of Steglitz-Zehlendorf, Germany, you can get there on the Berlin S-Bahn line S1. Some long-distance trains stop at the Berlin-Wannsee railway station as well.

Strandbar Weissensee
Berlin has plenty of lakes for outdoor swimming, but Weissensee distinguishes itself with its children-friendly waters as well as amenities of a real beach, like lounge chairs and showers.

With the Berlin Wall to one side and River Spree to the other, this may be one of the most unique beach bars in the world. There may be a beach volleyball championship or a dance party

Playing (or dancing) on the beach is a new concept in the German capital, although Berlin certainly has never been short of waterways (the rivers Spree, Havel, and Dahme converge here). Several nearby outdoor swimming pools attract swimmers who then like to use the city’s beach for an afternoon snooze. All this celebrating happens in the heart of the city’s otherwise rather stuffy government district.
