Went on a 3 day, 2 night trek for my birthday to Nubra Valley and Turktuk which is right at the top of India near the Pakistan border. I use the term 'trek' lightly, we were driven to these places by jeep and the most walking I did was for an hour!
The trip to Nubra on 13th was filled with absolutely fantastic scenery. We arrived at Nubra village where there was a festival going on and watched a Ladakhy women's dance, then walked through a valley between sand dunes and mountains to a total oasis, a gorgeous river with lots of camels. Sooo beautiful! That night we stayed at a lush little guest house, had beers and spliffs and lush food. The manager came out with a pancake with decorative tomato and carrots to sing happy birthday! Apparently he didn't have anything really to give but managed to make something out of nothing! The Israeli travelers I was with has arranged it bless them and sang happy birthday in Israeli.
Waking up in Nubra the morning of my birthday was amazing. Such a beautiful place! The drive to Turktuk was absolutely brilliant! Got totally lost in the scenery and chatting to our driver who was called Karma, mint! Turktuk is so untouched, stone houses, lots of greenery, flowers, mountains, rivers - its picture perfect! I wandered round the village and people looked in fascination. I chatted with some kids who wanted to take me to their school, I got their and their were about 40 kids, all asking if they could have a hair clip off me. I gave one of the girls a hair clip from my bag and then they all rushed me shouting hair pin hair pin! Canny scary! Luckily their teacher came.
Took some beers for the night, the owner of our guest house told me he had never seen beers before and they were illegal, Oops! So I kept sneaking off to my room to have a few sips! Took a tipsy walk to the next village which was great! Suddenly developed a crowd behind me, all asking me questions, mainly 'are you married?' and 'where is your husband?'! Got a bit lost and it started getting dark, but some girls took me under their wing and helped me get back to the guest house, such lovely people!
Spent the night with the Israeli travelers and ate my weight in curry. Pretty tame but absolutely gorgeous birthday!
