Maui Day 3

Viewed: 240
On Saturday we decided to explore South Maui.  This is the region best known for its large resort hotels and beaches.  We drove to the end of the main road.  All of a sudden we found ourselves in a huge lava field...

This picture really doesn't do it justice.  Some of these rocks are like 3 or 4 feet wide.  It is an incredibly rough and rocky surface.  Extremely cool.

Then we went to Big Beach, which is about the biggest beach on the island.  I'm used to southern Cali's BIG WIDE beaches, so this was a bit on the small side.  I broke out the kite for its only flight on the island...

I was flying for about 15 minutes and then the life guard showed up because the beach was getting ready to open.  He was pretty cool and let me fly for a bit but then I got shut down.  No kite flying on public beaches on Maui.  Bummer.

Dawn went off to explore the beach while I was flying and found the NUDE part of the beach (sorry, no pics) and some tide pools.

We hung out for a while longer and watched these crazy surfers for a bit...

Then it was off to find lunch.  We went to the Kihei Cafe and tried some pork fried rice and Chicken Fried Steak (Moco Style, oh yeah!)...

We coincidentally had some friends from Ballard who were in Maui at the same time for a relatives wedding and we went to the house they were renting for dinner.  The house came complete with a chicken coop and one particularly ornery chicken who did not like being cooped up...
