Brisbane to Birdsville
Left at 9.30am via Mt. Crosby to avoid the lights and made Toowoomba in good time. Spent a VERY cold nght at a free park at Amby. Next day headed for Mitchell, where we had a break and checked out the main drag before setting off for Quilpie. The caravan park there was soo full!!!!! that we were put on a horrible site and squashed in.
Set off for Windorah but then decided to camp on the banks of Coopers Creek. It is a lovely spot with plenty of wild life - pelicans, spoonbills, cormorants, herons, numerous waders and of course the eagles and kytes, flying around looking for a feed. Left there and lined up for fuel at Windorah. We then headed for Birdsville -400 kms -Road was remarkably good-90kms/hr. Arrived and immediately refuelled - big queue.
Had intended to have a counter tea at the pub but NO not raceweek - just drinks!!!!!so I defrosted the lamb curry for dinner as soon as we had set up our campsite at the racecourse. Thursday we spent in town and finished up sitting in the gutter watching the races and events and entertainment -pumpkin races, a Calcutta with toy horses, whipcracking and so on. Ted Brophy's Boxing Tent is here and he is friendly with George Tipping, the camp we have joined, so he calls in every day. George gave us nice entry medallions so we can come and go as we please. George has 6/8 horses here and Keith and Denise Ballard have 6/8 horses here .
Well, the rain began on Friday, early dawn, and fined up a bit and the races got underway. But unfortunately it began again and by the 5th race the horses were slipping and sliding and the jockeys said it was too dangerous to continue so the rest of the day was cancelled or postponed.
Well that was only the start of it!!!!!!
It rained off and on all night and it blew and blew so badly that we had to get up at midnight and get soaking wet and take down all our tarpaulins otherwise they would have been torn to pieces. After 32mms all the roads were closed and you would all have either seen or heard reports about the floodwaters on the news or on www.couriermail.com.au in the Birdsville Photos 2010.
We are allowed to go in the morning across the desert but all other roads will still be closed. We have our sat phone supplied by Johnny B.
