Rotorua to Taupo
The day started overcast (as had a number of days recently that had turned into beautiful sunshine. We Skyped Andrea first thing – she was at our house with Nick – it seemed strange to see our own living room in the back ground and to see them very warmly dressed in scarves and jumpers when we were in shorts and t-shirts about to clart on the sun tan cream! They had had some more snow and it was -3 and getting colder!
We set off from Rotorua and went to the Waiotapu Thermal Reserve, first visiting some bubbling mud then the Lady Catherine Knox Geyser. The geyser is a put on show by the park, they add washing soda to the geyser and it causes it to blow!
We then took a walk through the park and visited a number of other phenomenon caused by thermal activity. The most striking feature being that the colours just didn't look right at all.
After lunch we had the option of a jet boat ride along the river to Huka Falls. I didn't go for this but Pete did and what a grin he had on his face when he had finished – he thoroughly enjoyed the thrill of it all.
We then finished on our way to Taupo which is a town on the side of a lake with the same name. We had a beautiful walk along the side of the lake where there were a number of families picnicking on a sunny and lazy Sunday afternoon.
After our meal in the evening we watched a beautiful sunset. Once again another beautiful hot and sunny day.
