Walking at Saint Paul de Vence

On January 16, Rita and I were in Nice, when we decide to visit one of the most beautiful village of France, Saint Paul ( the true name of the village).

From Nice we take the comfortable bus n. 400 that brings us in an hour for 1 euro (20 km)

Saint Paul is a small middle ages village, from far it seems a fortress surrounded by high walls and a tower, the actual settlement date from the XIV-XVII centuries.

The discovery as tourist place is relatively recent, around 1930, when it began to be frequented by famous painters and artists as Picasso, Matisse, Chagall and many others.

We enter crossing the Porte Royale where is placed Lacan cannon used in 1544 in a battle in Piedmont, to the side two pleasant sculptures, we begin the visit walking on the Rue Grande, an ancient road, of roman origins that crosses the whole village from the Porte Royale to the Porte de Vence, we walks among small buildings in stone with beautiful façades, to the sides ample showcases, galleries of art, shops of souvenirs, hotels, restaurants, everything is well inserted, we often meet nice sculptures, the narrow road is intersected with beautiful road with arcs and staircases, remember to observe the paving of stones, everything is interesting, also because in January there are not much people, we meet the Place de la Grande Fontaine (the Placette), artistic little place with a famous and elegant fountain, to the back an ancient wash house.

The Rue Grande end in front of the small cemetery where is buried Chagall.

We go up on the walls (ignoring the danger signal) for enjoying of interesting panorama, with the sea in distance.

Then from the Place de l’Hospice, we walks at the side of the west part of the walls, from where the sight, in some points, reaches the sea.

Naturally we don't miss to visit the Chapel of the White Penitents also called Chapel Folon, of the XVII century (entry 2 Euro enclosed visit of the museum, open only in the afternoon, photo can be made without flash) containing the recent original paint in frescos, mosaics and sculptures in modern style (original the altar to form of hand, that symbolizes to give) planned from Folon after we visit the Collegial church (XIII century, referred in 1700), on the same place the townhall and the tower of the XIII century, rest of an ancient castle.

Take note that the Maeght Foundation, is closed for restructuring, instead the Colombe d’Or, the famous hotel and gallery of art, we have tried to enter, but the staff has told us that for visiting need to spend a night.

Finally we have the lunch in the famous Café de la Place build in 1850 Place (dish of the day 14,5 euro)

Then return to Nice with bus 400.
